The VC's Symposium on the Teaching-Research Nexus was held at the University on 3rd October 2001. There were over 70 participants from disciplines including Nursing, Nutrition, Accounting, Mathematics, Education and Engineering. A theatrical video production started off the proceedings with actors from the Faculty of Education fighting out the finer conflicting differences in perceptions about teaching and research in the boxing ring. After a welcoming speech from the VC citing the importance of the issue, Dr David Woodhouse keynote speaker from the Australian Universities Quality Agency reported on the AUU's Audit Panels' findings on how universities in New Zealand are meeting the legal mandate to link teaching and research. Below is a summary of what they found. The prolific researcher Professor Herb Marsh from the University of Western Sydney, Adjunct Professor Ann Zubrick from the University of Notre Dame - co-author of the recently published DETYA report on 'Strengthening the Nexus between Teaching and Research' - and Dr Angela Brew from the University of Sydney - author of several publications and books in the field - were other keynote speakers. Speakers from UoW also gave enthusiastic presentations of the ways in which they link teaching and research. The day ended with a discussion from the floor led by the panel of keynote speakers on the important question of "where to from here?" Participant's draft recommendations for enhancing the Nexus. Participant's feedback about the Symposium.
